Guy McKinley

  • Artist: Guy McKinley

  • Project: A 2 Colour Risograph print A3 size imagined cover to a story that tells the tale of two brothers who cover land and sea to save each other. Feburary 2013.

  • Client: Network / follower base online.

  • Genre: Fantasy art / book cover

Guy McKinley is a new artist on my radar, and one that inspires new work from myself. A simplistic, yet effective study of simple lines, textures and tones, Guy builds up seemingly working class pieces of artwork that I feel are inside my comfort zones to produce. His uncertain genre to work allows him to produce unguided artwork, which is great to see. Even the example image above is uncertain of what it really is.
Because he seems like a new, upcoming artist, his client base is slim and so is therefore his audience, which I know has to happen to the majority of fresh artists, but with an online presence and a constant stream of work that will surely change.

Methane Studios

  • Artist: Robert Lee (Methane Studios)

  • Project: Dave Matthews Band
concert poster in Albuquerque. 2009.

  • Client: Dave Mathews Band / Albuquerque Hall.

  • Genre: Hand made 3 color silkscreen concert poster measuring 14 inches x 24 inches. Signed and numbered edition of 450.

Methane Studios are a new find of mind, and a very good one. Producing concert posters for bands across the globe, opening themselves up to a worldwide audience, something that I aspire to gain over time. I think that the nature and style that methane generally produce is just within my comfort zones and therefore inspires me to get working.

Ken Taylor

  • Artist: Ken Taylor

  • Project: The Black Crowes Concert Poster
at The Alabama Theatre- Birmingham, AL.

  • November 15, 2008.

  • Client: The Black Crowes / Alabama Theatre

  • Genre: Rock poster/ print; professional offset print on nice heavy paper
poster measuring 18.5 inches x 26.75 inches, hand signed & numbered edition of 500.

Ken Taylor is a new artist to me, and definitely an encouraging one to be aware of. I am inspired by his detailed concepts that feature mainly on Rock Posters such as the example above. His realistic approach to form and colour prove exciting to me albeit outside of my comfort zone.

Jim Fitzpatrick

  • Artist: Jim Fitzpatrick

  • Project: 1981 Album cover art for Thin Lizzy

  • Client Thin Lizzy

  • Genre: Album artwork

I am thoroughly inspired by the way that Jim Fitzpatrick works, the ideas that conger up such imagery and talent, leading to iconic outcomes that stand the test of time. I admire Jim for his work in the music field, well known for his album artwork with Thin Lizzy during the 1970s and 80s, a field that I would love to break into.I particularly admire this piece of work because of its detail and complexity, something that is outside of my comfort zone, but exciting to me.

Roger Dean

  • Artist: Roger Dean

  • Project: 1970 Virgin Record Label

  • Client Virgin Records/Sir Richard Branson

  • Genre: Record Artwork

Roger Dean is a new artist to me, and an inspirational one at that. His detail and concept of made up landscapes and mythical creatures helps broaden my rigid mind and allows me to explore my thoughts deeper awakening uncreated life from me. For that statement alone, Roger’s work is special to me and how I perceive it.
Known worldwide for his work on album covers, Dean is inspirational and has, like Jim Fitzpatrick, created for himself the ability to achieve what others can only dream of nowadays.
His work however, isn’t far out of my comfort zone enough for me to just marvel at it, I do think I can create similar work, something tat I would live to do, whether it be for the  music industry or not.

Rick Griffin

  • Artist: Rick Griffin

  • Project: rock poster, 1969

  • Client: Honolulu International Centre

  • Genre: Rock poster

To me, Rick Griffin is my all time favourite artist. This is due to his surroundings and how he interpreted what and who was around him. The outcomes from jobs he took on in the music scene inspire me at how original and elite he became leaving a legacy that will surely last for ever.  I would have loved to have worked along side Rick or a least on the projects he undertook, learning form his styles and craftsmanship of an image which became a turning point in modern art. To me this is the ultimate type of work I can see myself doing, rock music posters
